Thirty minutes after you complete a 25-km race, you begin to notice severe muscle soreness and stiffness in your legs. If muscle damage occurred, the doctor would find enzymes such as creatine phosphokinase and proteins such as myoglobin or troponin in the bloodstream released by injured skeletal muscle cells. The level of these substances correlates with the severity of the injury.
