According to opponent-process theory:
 
  a. the intensity of hedonic state A is reinforced and increased by hedonic state B
  b. after an initial peak, hedonic state A is reduced in intensity by hedonic state B
  c. hedonic state B quickly decays
  d. hedonic state A slowly decays
