ANSWER: A single parameter of a chemical reaction (H or S, for example) is not very meaningful. A positive H for the unfolding of a protein might reflect either the breaking of hydrogen bonds within the protein or the exposure of hydrophobic groups to water. However, a comparison of several thermodynamic parameters can provide meaningful insights about a process. For example, the transfer of Na+ and Cl- ions from the gas phase to aqueous solution involves a very large negative H (thus a very favorable stabilization of the ions) and a comparatively small S.
