In 1947, Truman proposed an anti-lynching law, a permanent fair employment commission, and laws against poll taxes and discrimination in transportation. Under pressure from civil rights leaders, Truman overruled the objections of some of the nation’s highest ranking military officers and ordered the desegregation of the nation’s armed forces in 1948.
