Before mRNA can be used in translation (the making of a new protein), nonfunctional segments of the gene that have been transcribed into the strand of pre-mRNA have to be edited out. The nonfunctional parts of the gene are cut out (and the functional parts spliced together) by a special type of enzyme. What are these enzymes called?

a) introns
b) exons
c) genomes
d) snRNPs (snurps)
