The sternocleidomastoid muscles serves as important landmarks (both anatomically and surgically) that divide the neck into anterior and posterior triangles. The anterior triangle is bordered inferiorly by the clavicle, and laterally by the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid, and by the anterior border of the trapezius muscle.
