What patterns do children show according to neo-Piagetian research on progression through Piaget's developmental stages?

They show a linear progression through the stages and will spend a roughly equal amount of time in each stage.

They may jump from stage to stage, initially showing high levels of functioning and then temporarily regressing back to a lower level of cognitive functioning.

They often show no evidence of object permanence until after they have mastered conservation.

They show evidence of attaining a "higher" stage for some tasks than others, if tested on multiple tasks at the same time.
