Myths about Skinner include:
Skinner denied the existence of human consciousness and the value of studying it.
Skinner insisted that free will is an illusion.
Skinner was viewed as cold-blooded.
Skinner was criticized for raising his younger daughter in an Air-Crib without cuddling and holding her.
Rumors circulated that Skinner’s daughter had sued him, gone insane, or killed herself.
In contrast, the reality of each of these myths follows:
Skinner maintained that private, internal events are real and can be studied, but he insisted that they cannot explain behavior.
Skinner did refuse to credit personal traits or mental events for a person’s accomplishments.  He regarded himself and others, not as a “self,” but as a “repertoire of behaviors” resulting from reinforcement.
Skinner was given the Humanist of the Year Award in 1972.
Both of Skinner’s daughters were cuddled, doted on, and loved deeply.
Both Skinner’s daughters are perfectly well-adjusted and very successful.
