Negative feedback is a mechanism that the body uses to stabilize it's internal environment.  For example, to maintain hormonal levels such as cortisol.  When hormone levels are too high or too low, negative feedback pathways decrease or increases production of that specific hormone respectively by interfering with structures such as endocrine glands and the hypothalamus.
