The nurse manager is concerned that the staff is not exposed to many skills that have been instructed by the staff development department. Which can be done to ensure the staff is able to perform the skill should the situation arise in patient care?
1. Schedule monthly review sessions.
2. Assign two staff nurses to complete each technical skill.
3. Assign staff to review the procedure manual each shift.
4. Design an annual competency evaluation with the staff development department.

Rationale 1: To ensure readiness with skills that are not performed immediately after learning or training, many hospitals have begun to require yearly competency programs and reviews. A monthly review session might not be achievable depending upon the size of the staff and availability of the staff development instructor. (See Page 140 Timing the Evaluation)
Rationale 2: To ensure readiness with skills that are not performed immediately after learning or training, many hospitals have begun to require yearly competency programs and reviews. Assigning two staff nurses to complete each technical skill is not a cost-effective way to provide patient care. (See Page 140 Timing the Evaluation)
Rationale 3: To ensure readiness with skills that are not performed immediately after learning or training, many hospitals have begun to require yearly competency programs and reviews. Assigning staff to review the procedure manual each shift is not a good use of staff nurses’ time which could be spent providing patient care. (See Page 140 Timing the Evaluation)
Rationale 4: To ensure readiness with skills that are not performed immediately after learning or training, many hospitals have begun to require yearly competency programs and reviews. (See Page 140 Timing the Evaluation)
