my report in our class is about genes and traits.i am curious to know if there is a link in the birth defect to the genes of parents.is birth defects and abnormalities hereditary or not?

Quite honestly it depends which defects and abnormalities you're talking about.
Cystic Fibrosis is inherited, each parent has to be a carrier for the affected gene, and then the child must inherit the affected gene from both parents to suffer from Cystic fibrosis.
Birth defects such as a hole in the heart (septal defect) are caused by the heart of the foetus not developing correctly and are not inherited, although the incidence of being affected is higher if a sibling has also been affected.
