Hello everyone,

I just found this forum a few days ago. I have been struggling with Chemistry. I am hoping one of you can assist me with my homework. I was stuck with a few of the questions....

For the equation H2(g) + Cl2(g) Rightwards Arrow 2HCl(g), which statement CANNOT be true?

    1 mol of Cl2 is a reactant

2 molecules of HCl are formed

4 grams of H2(g) reacts with 1 mol of Cl2

the sum of the coefficients of the reactants is 2

In the equation SnO2 + 2C Rightwards Arrow Sn + 2CO, what substance is the reducing agent? NOTE: The "2" in SnO2 is intended to be a subscript.

    SnO2

    C

    Sn

    CO

Which reactant substance is the base in the following reaction:
NH3 + H2O => NH4+ + OH-

    OH-

    NH4+

    H2O

    NH3

If 2 pounds of hydrogen react with chlorine to form 73 pounds of hydrochloric acid according to the equation below, what weight of chlorine must react with the 2 pounds of hydrogen?
H2(g) + Cl2(g) Rightwards Arrow 2HCl(g)

    71 pounds

    35.5 pounds

    2 pounds

weight of chlorine used depends on the reaction conditions

For the first one: it's the third option, it's not 4 grams Face with Stuck-out Tongue

Second question, the answer is C, which is the second option. Reducing agent means that it gains electrons.

This is because, by definition, a reducing agent is one that can remove the oxygen from a particular compound, or reduce the oxidation state of that compound...(Just like how an oxidising agent is something that provides oxygen)

Here, SnO2 is getting reduced by C to Sn. The oxidation state of Sn is coming down from +4 to 0, and thus its getting reduced.

NH3 would be the base!

For the last question: From the equation, 2 moles ( 1 x 2 = 2lb) of hydrogen reacts with 1 mole (35.5 x 2 = 71lb) of Chlorine to produce 2 mole { 2(1 + 35.5} = 73 lb ) of HCl.
Therefore the answer is 35.50 x 2 = 71lb.
