Diploid organisms inherit 2 copies. This means they normally have at most 2 alleles for any given gene.

Haploid gametes each carry one entire copy of the genome (the set of unique chromosomes). Merging two gametes to form a zygote provides two copies of the genome so there are homologous pairs of chromosomes that may be carrying different alleles for any given gene.
