Postpoliomyelitis syndrome is seen in about 50% of patients who had the poliomyelitis virus many years ago. While the pathophysiology is not understood, the nurse anticipates
1. caring for patients with cold intolerance, dizziness, headaches, urinary incontinence, and sleep disorders.
2. a new outbreak of polio with the need for a new immunization program.
3. caring for patients with respiratory complications who must be quarantined.
4. working with patients who have polio again.

1 -- Patients who overcame the polio virus years ago will be faced with the postpoliomyelitis syndrome, which manifests as cold intolerance, dizziness, headaches, urinary incontinence, and sleep disorders. Presence of this postpoliomyelitis syndrome does not indicate that a resurgence of the disease polio is likely. The respiratory complications that may occur would be related to muscular weakness and would not require quarantine.
