Every few hundred years most of the planets line up on the same side of the Sun.

Part A: Calculate the total force on the Earth due to Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn, assuming all four planets are in a line. The masses are:

mVenus = 0.815mEarth,
mJupiter = 318mEarth
mSaturn  = 95.1mEarth

The mean distances of the four planets from the Sun are 108, 150, 778, and 1430 million km.

Part B: What fraction of the Sun's force on the Earth is this?
FEarth−planets/FEarth−Sun = ?

Not sure how to do this. Tried following the F = G (m1m2) / d^2 formula but I haven't found the right answer yet

I have answered it for you below.

If you have any questions about how I calculated it, message back

Thanks for your reply, bio-man! Unfortunately, the site (masteringphysics) says it's the wrong answer but I'll keep at it. I think I understand how to do the problem now, at least. Appreciate the help Slight Smile

I could try again. Probably you need to consider significant digits? Sometimes it's finicky programming the right answer. My students always complain about it too

Your answer has the correct number of sig digs so i don't think that's the problem

Thanks for the help once again; unfortunately, it looks like I exhausted all attempts on the site while trying to figure it out  Face with Rolling Eyes Apparently the answer is 9.60×10^17 N for Part A. Dunno about B.
But thanks bio-man and duddy for helping all the same  Slight Smile

EDIT: Just figured out part B. So guess I'm done with this problem, phew

Thanks for the update. If you could share part B, we'd appreciate it too!

I will be around if you have more questions

Sure thing!
Part B:

Fearth+sun: F = Gm1m2/d^2  = 14.8

FTotal = FVenus + FJupiter + FSaturn = -4.62x10^-4 + 8.06x10^-4 + 5.80x10^-5 = 4.02x10^-4
(venus is negative b/c it pulls opposite direction of Jupiter and Saturn)

Fearth+planets / Fearth+sun = 4.02x10^-4 / 14.8 = 2.72x10^-5

1 / 2.72x10^-5 = 36800

Ratio is 1/36800 or 2.72x10^-5
