Canadian First Nation youth commit suicide at a rate five to six times that of non-Aboriginal youth. Some of the predisposing factors may be:
Mental illness: First Nation youth have a higher incidence of mental health disorders.
Abuse: Many of the parents and grandparents of today’s First Nation youth went to school in residential schools, where abuse/corporal punishment was very common.
Feedback: Loss of a loved one early in life: Again, although this generation may not have lost anyone, the previous two generations lost the family they knew when they went to residential schools.
Family history of suicide: This is individual.
Long-term difficulty with peer relationships: Again, this is individual.
