Phosphorus has a variety of functions in the body. Some of these include:

•   Works with potassium inside of the cell to maintain proper fluid balance.
•   Plays a critical role in bone formation, as it is part of the mineral complex of bone. About 85% of our body's phosphorus is stored in our bones.
•   As a primary component of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), phosphorus plays a key role in creating energy for the body.
•   Helps regulate many biochemical reactions by activating and deactivating enzymes.
•   It is a part of our genetic materials, including DNA and RNA, and it is a component in cell membranes (as phospholipids) and part of the lipoproteins such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Phosphorus is widespread in many foods and is found in high amounts in foods that contain protein. Milk, meats, and eggs are good sources of phosphorus.
