What happens to the tempo (speed of the music) at around 0:40? What unifying (repetitive) features stand out in section 2 (which also begins at around 0:40)?

The music changes to a faster tempo.
 Brief, repeated melodic motifs (very short melodic units, often consisting of only a few notes) over an off-beat repeated lower string.
