The foreign population in California on the eve of the U.S.-Mexican War in 1846
 
  a. consisted of mostly Americans and those who had entered California without proper authorization.
  b. was of mostly British background and lived in separate communities from Californios.
  c. were not welcomed by Mexican officials because they competed with the local population for work.
  d. had pretty much assimilated into Californio culture while they also supported American conquest of California.
