The Salk vaccine should be used for immunocompromised individuals. Live attenuated vaccines carry a risk of mutational reversion in an immunocompromised host to a more virulent, disease-causing strain. This occurs because the virus is able to replicate at higher levels and acquire a significant number of mutations, some of which may lead to reversion to a pathogenic strain.
