What is the purpose of research? What do research papers have in common with other types of writing you have been asked to compose? What makes research papers different from other types of writing?

As discussed in this chapter, the best research papers involve true discovery; while it is typical to have a hypothesis at the start of the research process, students shouldn't ignore their findings. Many students don't approach research and research papers this way. Instead, they make a hasty claim and set out to support it at

all costs. They ignore others' research that contradicts their claim, looking only for points that support what they set out to substantiate.

Research papers aren't completely different from other forms of writing. Students will still want to clearly state their point
