The eukaryotic cell cycle consists of two parts (1) interphase, which is divided into three stages and makes up the major part of the cycle and (2) mitosis, which involves partitioning replicated chromosomes to daughter cells, followed by division of the cytoplasm. The three main checkpoints in cell cycle regulation are (1) the G1/S checkpoint where the cell either proceeds to the S phase or enters the inactive G0 state; (2) the G2/M checkpoint where the cell monitors completion of DNA synthesis and DNA damage; and (3) the M checkpoint is where the interval of cell growth when DNA replication is completed.
