This can be explained by the fact that intact dogs have brief episodic surges in serum LH concentrations at intervals of 1 to 8 hours throughout their estrous cycle. These surges are generally 20-60 minutes in duration. Therefore, if a high LH result is obtained, it is recommended that the veterinarian repeat the test, taking samples about 2 hours apart. A single low LH test result confirms the dog is intact.
