The F1 and F2 phenotypic ratios that Mendel observed in different crosses led him to conjecture that each parent contributes one version of a "unit factor" for each trait during reproduction. Each individual thus possesses two such factors (diploidy), and it is combinations of unit factors that constitute the genotype.
