The use of embryonic stem cells in federally funded research in the United States is a hotly debated topic. What are the arguments for and against use of such stem cell lines in research and treatment of disease?

The arguments in favor of this research primarily focus on the research and therapeutic gains that may be made through their use–in particular, the promise of using stem cells to treat diseases that involve deterioration of certain cell types. Arguments opposed to this research largely stem from opposition to one source of stem cells: human embryos.
