Just as the human body has both arteries and veins (one transporting oxygen to organs and the other carrying blood cells back to the lungs), plants have xylem and phloem. The phloem transports resources that are produced by the leaves to other parts of the plant, particularly to the roots and to new growth. The primary resource gathered by the leaves is sunlight, which is converted into sugar to fuel cellular activity. In addition, the leaves gather carbon dioxide, which is essential to botanical metabolism.
