I am considering taking physics (the general one) at leeds/imperial university, is it worth taking this course?
Are there too few jobs for to many graduates?
Is this the wrong subject to take if i would like to eventually be on 50 grand a year?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

If the 50K is your motivation...go the engineering route.  Civil and mechanical both have starting salary in the mid-high 50's.

Good luck.

If you have the brains to get a degree in physics, and want to make money only with undergraduate degree in physics, go into engineering instead.

You would at least need a masters or PhD to make it in pure physics, unless you want to teach high school.

I'm in my final year studying Physics at a UK university. The jobs I tend to see people going into are research based, or finance, most people on my course are not studying for a well paid job at the end of it, they do it because they enjoy it (really). Look in the back of Physics World or New Scientist; you'll see jobs that require brains the size of planets but the pay is peanuts.

I'm not saying its impossible to get a great job with such a degree as you often hear on the news about the lack of physics graduates. The numerical and problem solving skills you gain are second to none but I fear that my degree is too broad with very little overall specialism.

Dunno if I've helped. My plans are to become a commercial airline pilot should I finish the final year (its bloody hard).

You still need a masters to teach HS.  Go engineering.  $$$$$$
