I need a little help from the math experts please! Can anyone show and explain to me how I would go about solving:

8x-(5x + 6)= 18

I would really appreciate some direction.Thanks!

8x-(5x + 6) = 18
8x-5x-6 = 18
3x - 6 = 18
3x = 18 + 6
3x = 24
x = 24/3
x = 8

Open the one in parenthesis. consider - before the parenthesis is -1 so it will looks like this -1(5x+6)  <== then u multiply -1 with each terms in the brackets like -1x5 = -5 and -1x6 = 6. Now u can easily solve the question. =)

First distribute the minus sign to the terms inside the parentheses.

Now: 8x - 5x - 6 = 18

Simplify

3x - 6 = 18

Isolate the terms with x on one side, and numbers on the other

3x = 18 + 6 = 24

Now divide out the coefficient of x

x = 24/3 = 8

x=8

the parentheses basically mean that you are multiplying a negative 1 by whatever is inside the parentheses

so your equation will then be 8x-5x-6=18

subtract the 5x from the 8x, to get 3x

add 6 to both sides, so you zero out the 6 on the side with the 3x. Your equation now should be 3x=24.

Divide both sides by 3, and your answer will be x=8.

8x -5x -6 = 18
3x -6 = 18
3x = 24
x = 8

(You have to multiply out first by the negative 1 and then collect terms and leave the x's on the left and numbers on the left, then divide down)

8x ? (5x + 6) = 18
Is the subtraction of the grouped quantity bothering you?

Use a ? b = a + -1b, then use the distributive law.

8x ? (5x + 6) = 8x + -1(5x + 6) = 8x + -5x + -6 = 3x + -6
So the equation is 3x + -6 = 18 \\ add 6 to both sides to isolate the variable term

3x = 18 + 6 = 24  \\ divide both sides by 3 to isolate the variable.

x = 24/3 = 8

Check this result in the original equation, I did!

first you distribute the negative sign to make -5x and -6. Then you minus -5x from 8x which gives you 3x. After that you add 6 from both sides of the equal sign to get 24 on the other side. Divide 3x by 3 to get x and divide 24 by 3 to get 8. Your answers is 8. NOw insert eight back into the equation. 8(8)-[5(8) + 6] = 18. 64-[40 + 6] = 18. 64 - 46 = 18.
