Theoretically, there should be no uptake, but when I did my results, the bacteria had indeed taken up the plasmid DNA even when I didn't do any heat shock?

Does anyone have any explanations for this?

Maybe you added chemical reagents that help make the membrane permeable? I think calciumchloride can do that.

EDIT: Or it might be that you already have bacteria with the altered plasmid. They can exchange their plasmids which then is viewed by you as 'uptake'.

Transformation - uptake of plasmids, is commonly induced by calcium chloride.

Yes they can, but much less efficiently.  Sharing plasmids between different species or even different genera has been documented in nature.
