The rituals that religious groups engage in collectively give people a sense of social solidarity, or being connected and supported by other people. Religion offers answers to questions about ultimate meaning, thereby combating anomie, or confusion about the meaning of life. Anomie also includes confusion about how to live, offers guidelines for everyday life, provides emotional comfort to its supporters, a means of social control, and support for the government. Religion serves as a dynamic force that provides social structure and makes life predictable.
