Question about dominate and recessive genetic traits?

First of all understand what an allele is. An allele is a gene that codes for a particular trait . . . like eye color. Many traits have multiple alleles that code for it. Thats where you get getting dominant / recessive / etc.

Dominant means that one allele will mask another. For example say someone has the genotype (genetic makeup) Aa. A = black hair a=blonde hair. Capital letter signifies dominance so in this case black hair is dominant. Even though the person has a small a he/she will have black hair. An important thing to note is that this person can still pass on his/her blonde hair allele to the child.

Recessive means that in order to have blonde hair you must have 2 of the same allele. So in the given example . . . aa. You must have little a little a.

So if you have two "heterozygous" individuals (meaning one of each allele) they can potentially have all sorts of children.

If you have an Aa father (black hair) and a Aa mother (black hair) you can have children with the genotype AA or Aa or aa. To find out the theoretical probability that each child will have a certain genotype you must make a punnet square. But thats kind of complicated to illustrate using words. Im sure you have one in your book.
