1 -- Magnetic resonance imaging scans discover injuries to the brain and spinal cord. This is the diagnostic test that should be done for this patient. Cervical spine and spinal cord x-rays can detect fractures of the vertebra but will not detect injuries to the brain. A cerebral angiogram can detect injuries to the brain but not of the spinal cord.
