Hi All,

Would IV antibiotics quickly decrease a high fever (104) with abdominal infection, for example more quickly than tylenol?

We were forced to choose between the two on our exam and would choose tylenol, however antibiotics was the only answer accepted.

Thanks!

Tylenol is a mild analgesic, it's used to reduce pain, not fever.

Not true. Tylenol does reduce fever. And Yes it will take time, the question is which is faster.

Antibiotics would only reduce fever if the bacteria are causing an inflammatory response. In essence, they can reduce fever by killing off the pathogen - the source of the fever.
Don't forget to give me a thumbs up!
