The most superficial layer of skin (composed of keratinocytes), is dead and provides a protective barrier. If these cells were alive at the surface, how would that compromise the protective function of the integument?

You'd lose that protective layer, that first source of defense against pathogens (invading microorganisms). Recall that keratinocytes are filled with keratin (Protein) that protects against scratches and bruises.
