Hello everyone,

I am having a tough time understanding the general idea in beadle & tatum's experiment. If you can explain the general idea and purpose it would help me greatly. I somewhat understand the steps, thus far I got: the first step is exposing N. crassa spores to radiation to create mutations, the mutated spores are all plated in complete medium (all can grow), we then test the ability to grow on minimal medium, the mediums that do not grow is then isolated and mixed with "lysine, arginine, & leucine". According to the slide, the auxotroph was able to grow on arginine & therefore that auxotrophic arginine is then mixed and grown on "ornithine, citrulline & arginine". After this step is where I am stumped, I do not understand what each class mutants represents nor the metabolic pathway. I'm sorry for such a long post, but any sort of advice will help!

You posted this in >3 different categories - please don't do that again or you will be banned. Anyway, best way to understand this is to watch the following animation.
