Been having trouble sleeping the past few weeks.

I'm considering buying some Nyquil to help me on those long nights.

Should I have any concerns? Could someone tell me what the active ingredients are so that I have a bit of peace of mind?

Thanks!

Doxylamine is the sedating ingredient in the normal Nyquil, but if you're taking it only for sleep, I wouldn't use that (since it contains acetaminophen, which will tax the liver unnecessarily).  I would use diphenhydramine (brand names: Zzzquil, Benadryl, others...).  The recommended dose for insomnia is 50 mg, but 25 mg knocks me out pretty good.  Use the minimum dosage that provides efficacy.

I've used that before for my allergies; it gave me really bad dreams and unwanted headaches. Since it acts as sleep-aid, soon after taking benadryl, I would get really tired. I think that stuff actually causes brain damage if taken in high doses - I read it somewhere a while back. For this reason, I'm kind of glad Nyquil doesn't contain it. Thanks for responding, you've answered my question quite well.

Actually, any negative side-effects to Doxylamine?

Side effects of doxylamine:
dry mouth, ataxia, urinary retention, drowsiness, memory problems, inability to concentrate, hallucinations, psychosis, and a marked increased sensitivity to external stimuli

Anything other than that, you'll have to go the prescription route.  I've personally tried vistaril and remeron - both put me out for days.  They sometimes'll use Ambien.  In short-term, they'll use a benzodiazapine like valium or xanax, but with drug abuse, practitioners are less likely to prescribe these.

Face with Open Mouth Whaaa? That's scary. I don't want a subscription, just something over-the-counter. Luckily though, those side-effects seem pretty generic; I mean, almost anything can cause some of those, even Tylenol. Therefore, I think I may go ahead and use it, and see what happens!

Thanks

Yeah I much prefer diphenhydramine, but give it a shot.  Let me know how it goes.

Good question, I'm doing a lot better, but without any sleep aids! It just got better over time, must have been a bad sleep cycle that I was in.
