• It is a system that links soil to all life on Earth.
• Organisms in the soil, such as bacteria and other microorganisms, feed on the nutrients provided by animal waste products and decaying plant and animal matter.
• Plants use the nutrients in the soil to grow, and to produce food.
• Humans and animals later obtain these same nutrients when they eat the plants and plant products.
• Soil also depends on organisms to anchor it in place and keep it well oxygenated.
• Without healthy soil, this web would break down and life would be affected.
