Myocardial contraction results from a change in voltage across the cell membrane (depolarisation), which leads to an action potential. Although contraction may happen spontaneously, it is normally in response to an electrical impulse. This is how the heart beat is achieved. The thickness of the myocardium increases with athletes heart due to the increased demand placed on the heart with cardiovascular conditioning.
