Women in Greece were expected to remain under the authority of their fathers or husbands. Within Rome, women identified as part of a clan that was also patriarchal in nature, with the concept of paterfamilias being central to the authority of a household. However, within the Republic, women would marry as a means to retain family power, either through usage or purchase marriage arrangements. There were better opportunities for women to obtain an education, easier access to legal rights (including divorce), and public presence of women was much more prevalent. Women within the Plebeian order were able to work in a variety of professions, although a woman's primary duty within Roman society was still to marry and raise children.
