stem is just a pipe. it is made out of dead cells the stem is only the place where the sugars water and minarals go. one type of cells "drives" the water and minarals from the root to the leaves it is called the xylem.The other type is called the phloem and inside it moves water and sugar from the leaves to the roots. so basically it is just like a tool and not a live tissue. hope i helped

sugars (glucose) are made in the leaf and not in the stems. the concentration in the leaves will be higher so that diffusion of the sugars into the phloem from the leaf can occur. note that glucose is loaded into the phloem by diffusion and active transport and the energy required for active transport is released by the mitochondria in the companion cells of the phloem.

and to the other guy, the stem is not entirely made out of dead cells. xylem has dead cells while phloem has living cells
