Teaching should be tailored to elderly patients. Reports indicate that two thirds of U.S. adults 66 years old and older have inadequate or marginal literacy skills, and 81 of patients 60 years old and older at a public hospital could not read or understand basic materials such as prescription labels. Although each patient must assessed individually, cognitive and sensory alterations often occur with aging, and the teaching materials should be adjusted accordingly.
