The difference between encephalitis and meningitis is that
 
  a. encephalitis can be life threatening, but meningitis cannot.
 b. meningitis can be life threatening, but encephalitis cannot.
 c. encephalitis is caused by bacteria, but meningitis is caused by a virus.
 d. encephalitis is an infection of the brain itself, whereas meningitis is an infection of the lining of the brain and/or spinal cord.
