The nurse working with a group of middle-aged females with alcoholism in a substance-abuse treatment program discovers that all of the participants began drinking in their teens or early 20s, and all have engaged in heavy binge drinking.

Several of the women have been in treatment before. When the nurse asks one of these clients about any family history of problems with alcohol and other drugs, she is likely to respond with which of the following statements? a. There are no other people in my family with this problem.
  b. Only one or two distant relatives have the same problem.
  c. My grandfather, father, uncle, and cousins also have problems.
  d. I think I got it from my mom.

The woman will most likely respond that her grandfather, father, uncle, and cousins have the problem. Because these women describe that they began drinking in their 20s and engaged in binge drinking, they most likely have type II alcoholism. Type II alcoholism tends to run in families, and there is evolving evidence for genetic factors in many cases.
