Family therapy would be appropriate for addressing the father's demeaning behavior and the child's poor self-esteem. Case management would help the family discover and obtain appropriate assistance from the mental health and social service agencies that offer counseling, child care assistance, and other needed services. Emotional support and positive feedback (for existing examples of effective coping and parenting and for new behaviors that will improve the family's circumstances) will encourage progress and help move the family toward more effective functioning; it will also help maintain an effective therapeutic relationship. Crisis intervention and safety plans are not indicated because, although dysfunctional, the family is not in crisis per se, and there is no physical abuse or danger.
