A nurse is giving a presentation on mental health promotion at a community center. A participant states, My friend tells me I'm depressed because I don't have a lot of energy and have trouble concentrating.

I had to quit my full-time job because I don't seem to have the energy to manage it. But I don't want to kill myself or anything like that. Although more data are needed for diagnosis, the nurse suspects that the client may have which of the following?
  A) Bipolar II disorder
  B) Cyclothymic disorder
  C) Dysthymic disorder
  D) Major depressive disorder

Ans: C
Feedback:
Dysthymia is a mild depressive illness in which symptoms, such as poor appetite or overeating, insomnia or excessive sleep, low energy, fatigue, low self-esteem, poor concentration, and difficulty making decisions, are chronic but less severe than with major depression. Diagnostic criteria include depressed or irritable mood most of the day, occurring more days than not for at least 2 years.
