A woman clad in a burka comes to the Emergency Department accompanied by her husband, who appears to be Middle Eastern.

She explains in English that she is pregnant and experiencing heavy vaginal bleeding. The hus-band tells the nurse that his wife has had bipolar disorder for 10 years. The nurse caring for the woman should:
  1. Require her husband to leave the room
  2. Call a female gynecologist
  3. Call a male psychiatrist
  4. Call an interpreter

The client's bleeding requires immediate attention; thus it is more important to call a gynecologist than a psychiatrist. A client who wears a burka would be more comfortable being examined by a woman, and undoubtedly the husband would prefer this option also. The husband's culture will require that he remain in the room with his wife while she is attended by strangers. Option 4: an interpreter would be necessary only if the nurse determined that the one or both parties did not comprehend English.
