A client complains of little change in her blood pressure even though she has been doing the bio-feedback exercises.

She states, The machine has not been successful. The nurse tells her she will observe the next session. The nurse is aware that:
  1. Biofeedback assists the individual to consciously lower blood pressure
  2. The machine is a critical component of biofeedback during all phases
  3. A client's muscle responses determine the success of biofeedback
  4. The client's mood affects the results of biofeedback

With biofeedback, a client can learn to gain conscious control over bodily responses thought to be beyond voluntary command. Listening to the monitoring device makes the client aware of whether or not the mental exercises, breathing, or other techniques being used are effective. The signal reinforces effective use of the technique until the technique literally becomes second na-ture and the monitor is no longer needed. 2. The machine is only needed early in therapy. 3. This is not entirely true; sometimes the machine is set to monitor other parameters. 4. Biofeedback tends to lower anxiety.
