The Emergency Department nurses were discussing a client who seeks help almost every holiday by expressing suicidal ideation or making a suicide gesture. One of the nurses stated, I don't think he is serious about hurting himself.

Maybe we should not see him the next time he comes. Which response from the charge nurse is accurate in dealing with the client who may be using suicidal behavior as a ploy to enter the hos-pital?
  1. Telling him we cannot see him may be the answer to stop this behavior.
  2. Each episode must be individually evaluated, and all options must be explored.
  3. He obviously needs the support he gets at the hospital.
  4. We should avoid showing any warmth the next time he comes in.
