The principles that focus on the development and maintenance of a healthy alliance include: the relationship is therapeutic rather than social; the focus remains on the patient's needs and problems rather than on the nurse; the relationship is purposeful and goal directed; the rela-tionship is objective rather than subjective in quality; and the relationship is time-limited ra-ther than open-ended. The sharing of experiencing is not patient centered.
