Following two weeks of flu-like symptoms, a 33-year-old woman presented to her primary care provider who included HIV testing in the client's order blood work. The results of the test have come back positive.

Which of the client's following statements is most characteristic of the first stage of the grief reaction to HIV/AIDS diagnosis?

  A) If my boyfriend hadn't been sleeping around, this never would have happened.
  B) I can't believe I was so stupid. I can't believe I did this to myself.
  C) Let's do a repeat test. I'm pretty sure that something's got mixed up with this test.
  D) I don't know what to say. I'm struck dumb. I don't know what to say.

Ans: D
The initial stage of the grief reaction to HIV/AIDS diagnosis consists of shock, numbness, and disbelief. Blame of oneself or someone else is likely to emerge later, as is denial of the validity of the results.
